The Art of Living in 400 sq. ft + Not Killing Each Other

Trust me, it sounds way worse than it actual is. My best friend, Rachel, and I both moved in with our boyfriends on the same day this summer after graduating from college. One difference is that we live on different coasts (Portland & NYC) and our apartments are drastically different sizes (700 v 400 square feet). Regardless, usually during our weekly FaceTime we mention the same issues and difficulties.

So of course, we made a list:

Simple Green Smoothie

My go-to 5 minute recipe for the perfect morning smoothie.

Lately I’ve been trying to incorporate more vitamin rich and plant-based breakfasts into my day, so green smoothies have been a staple.

A lot of recipes are complex and involve a lot of prep work, but for me, the mornings are hard enough, I don’t try and complicate them even more.

How I Turned Down My Job Offer + Moved to NYC (without one)

It's not as hard as it sounds. And honestly, it all started when the VP of this company (let's call it Tech Co) backed into my car in a parking lot.

Okay, maybe it started before then, but that was the first time I actually admitted out loud that I had made a big mistake by accepting a "dream job" in Silicon Valley for a global technology company during the fall of my senior year.

Long story short, in February a visitor at UGA backed into my car in the parking lot and during this encounter he asked for my plans after graduation. I randomly admitted that I had a job I honestly didn't want and I felt stuck.

Subway Musings

I've always had a "problem" with eye contact. "Problem" more correctly explained as I make too much of it sometimes. Partially motivated by my horrible 20/200 vision and partially because I'm always interested in the lives of complete strangers.

The Bahamas

This past week Frank & I adventured with 25 of our closest friends on a cruise to the Bahamas. From Monday until Friday we ate, drank, and laughed while enjoying the sun and the ocean. It really was an escape from reality because of our lack of cell service and wifi. Our lives become so dictated by technology that it became so refreshing to have to knock on our friend's doors to get their attention instead of sending them a quick text.

Valentine's Day Gifts under $100

For this post, I talked with Frank and got his input on gifts he's liked receiving in the past as well as items he has his eye on. He's a unique guy because he loves adventure and sports, so I've gifted Nike shoes, athletic watches and clothes, but he is also sentimental. He loves the gifts I've given that are unique and hand-crafted, so that is how I'll split up the post today - a section for quick and easy gifts to buy as well as gifts for the person who loves thoughtfulness and sentimentality.

Winter Trip to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

In 2002 my family of five moved from San Diego, CA to Coeur d'Alene, ID. At the time I didn't appreciate the beauty of our new home, but once I moved to Georgia for college I soon realized how stunning the scenery, lake, and snow really were.

I go home every Christmas, but this was the first one where I took photos of the snow and the place I've called home for so long. Coeur d'Alene is located about 100 miles from the Canadian border in Northern Idaho. It is far from farm land and resembles Canada and the snowy mountains in Colorado.

Surrounded by mountains and bordering a beautiful national forest protected lake, Coeur d'Alene is home to about 15,000 full time residents with 30,000 summer residents that influx into the county when the temperatures rise about 60 degrees and the snow melts off.

Biltmore Estate

In early November, Frank & I decided to take a day trip over to Asheville to explore The Biltmore Estate. Because it was a last minute adventure, we had low expectations for the day.

We were completely blown away by the architecture and detail that went into the construction of this massive home.

Winter Coats

Growing up in the cold Tundra of North Idaho, I've always struggled with finding cute clothes to wear in the dead of winter. From down parkas to waterproof boots, I always had a hard time with staying warm and looking my best. Camel coats have been such a staple for me this season, because they keep you warm but are also thin enough to layer under a down parka for extra warmth. And voila, you take off the parka when you get inside to your dinner party and you're good to go.

How Pinterest Changed Fashion

t is bold to say - but it also true - that women and men conform societal standards. May that be in their relationships, jobs, future plans, or fashion choices. Up until the early 2000s, fashion was dictated by elite shows in New York or L.A. where a few select style gurus would tell the world what was 'hot' and what was 'not'. When something was in style, everyone felt pressure to add it into their wardrobe in some way or another - cue 90s grunge. That was until 2010, when Pinterest was born. Pinterest is a form of social network/bookmarking site where you can collect pins (usually visual) into your own boards. Hence the phrase 'pinning'. With over 10 billion pins across 100 million boards for women's fashion alone, Pinterest unleashed something completely contradictory - an individual personalized sense of style.

Why Millennial Women Trust @juliahengel

Unless you have been hiding away from social media for the past 5 years, you have undoubtedly noticed the market saturation of social media fashion or beauty bloggers on Instagram and Snapchat. Girls with tag lines such as Sincerely Jules or Gal Meets Glam are now modeling for clothing companies like Revolve and Nordstrom. But why are they suddenly so popular? Well first off, these fashion bloggers took advantage of the growing young social media savvy audience.

Why We Leave

I've made countless memories over the course of my 20 years on this earth, half of those have been during my time here at The University of Georgia. See, I'm not from here. My home is 2,500 miles northwest of Athens, in the small quiet Christmas-loving town of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Unheard of and unknown, my first few months in Georgia were tough ones. I felt alone and different. Because of my lack of common ground, I sought quality conversation with new friends, something that caught most off-guard. I wasn't talking about the weather or about high school, I was talking about life goals and interests and what makes them, them.
